Greetings waveform junkies,
It’s June! That means I’ve got 23 more days before we head to Valencia, Spain for our next 3 months’ digital nomad destination. Yikes. This is the time when I start to slowly pack and sell things I don’t need to bring with me. Not fun but it’s part of this life.
Does Remote Work Have An Image Problem?
The term “digital nomad” has a serious online messaging problem. There are far too many pics of nomads working on their laptops on beaches. Between the sunlight, water, and sand, it’s not actually a place many of us work. I post pics of my time at the water here in Split but these are on my walking breaks (right photo). But the neighborhood where I live in Split is in the industrial zone. And although you can see trees (left photo), it’s really grey and dull looking. Not sexy or glamorous at all. It takes me about 45 minutes to walk to most beach areas, and 1 hour to the one below in Marjan Park. I admit this is a privileged distinction. I’ve got comfortable and safe housing, food, and the ability to spend this time walking to the beach. But this disconnect is something I think you should know if you’re thinking about going fully remote outside your passport country. Happy to dig into this more in future issues, if there’s interest.
I’ll explain how this image problem connects to remote podcast editing specifically in the premium issue today. Global Podcast Editors is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. And don’t forget, you’re a professional podcast editor so you can write off the $5 per month or $50 per year subscription because it’s a business expense! (Not sure if this holds globally so check your local tax laws for specifics)
Let’s swim on over to some jobs now!
Here’s what this sub-newsletter will contain:
I’ve reshaped these remote work posts to emphasize the importance I wrote about in this issue: that making genuine connections is more fruitful than applying for work.
PART 1: applying for jobs (what we’re familiar with)-the free version
PART 2: making genuine connections so people offer you work (what we need to do more of) available in the premium (paid) subscription version.
Part 1: Applying for jobs
2 quick things:
JOB TITLES: There are wonky job labels in many of these posts so I’m checking to make sure they’re podcast editing related.
I’M A REMOTE WORK-SEEKER TOO: I’m NOT involved with the hiring process for any of these jobs. I’m looking for jobs along with you and sharing what I find.
100% remote podcast editing work
(NO “remote U.S.” nonsense here!)
#1: Audio Editor, from Podjobs
Fully remote: working with a UK-based team at Mags Creative
Salary range: £150.00 to £220.00 (hourly rate)
2 days week, 3 month initial contract, with a view to extend
What I like: Love what they say on their mission page:
“We exist to create meaningful connections worldwide”
Their podcasts (with insanely great logo art)
#2: Podcast Editor, from Global Podcast Editor Chats, May 26, 2022
In case you missed this job last week, I wanted to repost it. All info here. In short, our GPE guest last week, Amelia from Softer Sounds, mentioned that she was having a hard time finding podcast editors to outsource to.
Note: I’d love to list more independent production company jobs like Amelia’s going forward than jobs I see online. So if you know of any production houses that would like to post here, please forward this newsletter to them. Thank you!
Global Podcast Editor Chat TOMORROW
Lastly, tomorrow we have another LIVE Global Podcast Editor Chat on YouTube. And did you know that we’re repurposing all of the lives in podcast versions as well? This week’s LIVE is at 11am London/6am New York, but check the YouTube link for your correct timezone, please. If you’re awake, human, and want to join us in the chat room, we’d love to see ya there.
